AEO. The Answer Box.
Getting found online now means winning three different games: SEO, AEO, and GEO. Answer Engine Optimization decides who gets quoted before anyone opens a tab.
AEO is the practice of structuring content so AI answer engines such as Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Bing Copilot select it, quote it, and cite it directly inside a generated answer. A citation, in plain terms, means the AI names your business or pulls language straight from your page - sometimes with a link back, sometimes just a mention. Win the citation and the customer already trusts the business before a single link gets clicked.

What AEO Is
AEO sits between SEO and GEO, and borrows tools from both. For a detailed breakdown of how the two disciplines differ, see GEO vs AEO.
Earns a ranking position. The business still depends on a click.
Earns a citation inside the answer. The words show up before any link exists.
Earns a recommendation. The brand gets named with no citation trail at all.
AEO is not a replacement for SEO. Search engines still crawl, index, and rank a page before an answer engine can pull from it. AEO is what happens after that: the structure, clarity, and evidence that make a page worth quoting instead of worth skipping.
Where AEO shows up
| Engine | What it does |
|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews | Generates a synthesized answer at the top of Google search results, citing sources below it |
| ChatGPT (with browsing/search) | Answers directly in conversation, citing sources inline when it searches the web |
| Perplexity | Built specifically as an answer engine; every answer shows numbered citations |
| Bing Copilot | Answers inside Microsoft's search experience, citing sources it pulled from |
Why It Matters
The numbers make the case without help.
AI search visits in Q1 2026 are up 42.8% year over year from 15.6B. Google search grew 2.4% over the same window.
Semrush data, via Contently 2026 AEO guide
of Google searches now end without a click. Most people get their answer inside the results or AI chat, and never see the page it came from.
DigitalApplied, 2026
more organic CTR for sites cited in AI Overviews vs. non-cited sites on the same query. Paid CTR advantage: 91%.
Seer Interactive, November 2025
better conversion for AI search visitors vs. average organic visitors; they arrive already having read a synthesized comparison.
Semrush
A business that ignores AEO is not losing traffic slowly. It is handing high-intent buyers to whichever competitor the answer engine decides to quote instead.
The Goal
The goal of AEO is singular: become the source the machine quotes. Not page one. Not "in consideration." The name inside the answer, attributed, with a link back where possible.
There is no partial credit. Either the answer engine cites the business or it cites someone else.
AEO Metrics to Measure
These metrics sit inside the broader concept of AI search visibility — the full picture of how a brand performs across AI answer engines.
| Metric | What it tells you | Where to get it |
|---|---|---|
| Featured snippet capture rate | How often Google surfaces the content directly, without a click | Google Search Console |
| AI citation rate | How often AI answer engines quote or link to the content specifically | Ghostd |
| Share of voice | How often the brand appears in answers vs. competitors, across the same questions | Ghostd |
| Query coverage | How many of the real questions buyers ask are actually answered on the site | Ghostd |
| Citation position | Whether the brand is cited first, or buried among five other sources | Ghostd |
7 AEO Tips to Get You Cited
These principles also apply when the goal is earning direct recommendations — see how to get recommended by ChatGPT for the recommendation-specific playbook.
Answer-first structure
The direct answer sits in the first 50 to 80 words. Context and brand story come after, not before.
Named entities
People, companies, products, dates, and places are spelled out - not left to pronouns.
Sourced evidence
Statistics, quotes, and claims are attributed and verifiable, not asserted.
Clean Q&A formatting
Headers that mirror real follow-up questions, not marketing copy.
Schema markup
Structured code added to a page that translates its content into a language machines can read without guessing.
Freshness
Answer engines favor content that gets updated on a real cadence, not content frozen since launch.
Crawl access
If AI crawlers are blocked at the server level, none of the above matters.
"Sites cited in AI Overviews earn 35% more organic CTR and 91% more paid CTR than non-cited sites on the same query."
"70% of marketing professionals believe AEO will significantly impact their strategy within one to three years. Only 20% have started implementing it."
The gap between the 70% and the 20% is the opportunity. Most competitors know AEO matters and have done nothing about it yet.
How AEO Actually Works
Step 1: Query fan-out. The system takes the person's question and breaks it into sub-questions. A query like "best plumber for a tankless water heater install" fans out into several implicit questions: what is a tankless install, what does it cost, who is qualified, who is nearby.
Step 2: Retrieval. For each sub-question, the system searches its index and pulls back candidate passages - not whole pages. This is retrieval-augmented generation, or RAG: the model does not answer from memory, it answers from documents it just retrieved.
Step 3: Entity resolution. Retrieved passages get matched against known entities. A mention of "Ghostd" gets linked to the Ghostd organization, not treated as a random string. Clear, unambiguous entity references win this step. Vague ones lose it.
Step 4: Grounding and generation. The model generates an answer using the retrieved passages as its factual anchor, and cites the source it pulled from.
Where schema actually fits - no hype. Google and Microsoft Bing have both confirmed schema markup helps their systems classify and extract content. But a controlled study found no direct correlation between how much schema a site had and how often it got cited. The honest read: schema helps at the indexing layer - it does not replace clear, evidence-backed content.
What "Organization schema" actually means. Picture a business's information written twice: once as a paragraph a person reads, and once as a labeled form only a computer reads - name in one box, address in another, phone number in another. Organization schema is that second, computer-readable form. It tells search engines and AI systems exactly who the business is, so a mention of the brand name never gets confused with an unrelated business.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is AEO, in one sentence?
AEO is the practice of structuring content so AI answer engines like Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity quote it and cite it directly inside a generated answer, instead of just linking to it.
How is AEO different from SEO?
SEO earns a ranking position and still depends on a click. AEO earns a citation inside the answer itself - sometimes with a link, sometimes without - before the searcher ever sees a results page.
How is AEO different from GEO?
AEO earns a citation - something an AI attributes to a specific page. GEO earns a recommendation, where the AI names a brand directly with no citation trail at all. AEO is about being the source. GEO is about being the answer.
Does schema markup guarantee a citation?
No. Google and Microsoft Bing have confirmed schema markup helps their systems classify and extract content, but a controlled study found no direct correlation between schema coverage and citation rate. Schema helps at the indexing layer - it does not replace clear, evidence-backed content.
How does Ghostd help with AEO?
Ghostd tracks whether a business is actually getting cited, by which answer engines, in what position, and with what sentiment, then shows exactly where the gaps are so a business can close them before a competitor does.
